Seminar with Michael Friedl Shihan – Oct. 27-29, 2017

Denver Aikikai is proud to welcome Michael Friedl Shihan to Denver on October 27-29, 2017. 

Michael Friedl Shihan

Michael Friedl Shihan (7th Dan) is founder and chief instructor of Aikido of Ashland. He is Division Head for Division 2 of the California Aikido Association. He is also a previous President of the California Aikido Association.

Friedl Shihan began his Aikido training in 1972 under Clyde Takeguchi Shihan. He became uchi deshi for Takeguchi Sensei from 1975-1977. He was also uchi deshi for Saito Shihan in Iwama, Japan from 1981-1983. In Iwama he studied weapons intensely and the Iwama style of weapons remains a strong influence in his practice. In 1978, Friedl Shihan established a dojo in Burlington, Vermont. He moved to Ashland, Oregon in 1979 and started a small aikido club. He returned to Ashland in 1986 and started a dojo at the Ashland YMCA in 1987. In July of 1994 Aikido of Ashland opened its doors to dojo members.

Friedl Shihan affiliated with Frank Doran Shihan in 1979 and has been a student of his since that time.

Seminar with Dan Messisco sensei: June 16-18, 2017

Denver Aikikai welcomes back Dan Messisco sensei for another incredible workshop in June 2017.

Dan Messisco has been training in martial arts since 1964. His martial arts background includes extensive training in both Korea and Japan. He earned his Chodan in Tang Soo Do in Korea and studied under Hwang Kwan Jang Nim, son of Grand Master Hwang Kee. In Japan, his training includes time at Hombu dojo in Tokyo, Japan. Messisco Sensei studied under Mitsugi Saotome Shihan in Sarasota, Florida where he earned his Shodan (ASU). He also studied under Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan in Boulder, Colorado where he received his Nidan and Sandan rank (ASU). He received his Aikikai Yondan in Japan, Godan while studying in Pennsylvania, and Rokudan while in Michigan.

Dojo-cho Edgar Johansson Promoted to 5th Dan at 2017 Kagami Biraki

Denver Aikikai is tremendously proud to announce that Dojo-cho Edgar Johansson sensei received the rank of godan (5th degree black belt) at the 2017 Kagami Biraki. We are honored by the aikido community and grateful for his leadership in and out of the dojo.

Here’s to a year of bounty and learning, discipline and joy. Join us in 2017! Beginner’s class is underway and kyu tests will be held at the end of February!

Details:
Take your practice to the next level as we explore kick-your-asana conditioning. Inversion training and awesome acrobatic techniques. We will build progressively towards hand to hand and standing acrobatics. Please check out the prerequisite video. This week is not for the faint of heart.

Skills covered:
Solar AcroYoga Asana sequence, Strength training elements, Alignment, balance and endurance in inversions, Spotting techniques, Specialized Acrobatic flying groups (2 bases, 2 flyers), Foot-to-Hand, Hand-to-Hand, and 2-High Acrobatics

Self-Defense Workshop with Cyndy Hayashi – August 6, 2016

Denver Aikikai proudly announces the return of one of our most popular events: Self Defense with Cyndy Hayashi shihan!
Cyndy Hayashi sensei

Cyndy Hayashi is a 7th degree black belt in Aikido. She has successfully defended herself in situations at work, home and in the street. This unique 3 hour workshop offers practical information in a light-hearted fun atmosphere. The class will be tailored to the wants and needs of participants but will explore principles of self defense, including how to stay calm and think clearly under duress, how to deter an attacker before they engage, and how to keep yourself safe while exiting dangerous situations. No prior experience with martial arts is necessary.

Ages 10+ welcome. Dress in loose comfortable clothing with socks. We will be working from standing and ground positions.

Seminar: Frank Doran Shihan and Tres Hofmeister Sensei Oct. 2016

Please mark your calendars and plan to join us on Saturday, October 22, 2016 for an incredible event with Frank Doran Shihan (7th dan) and Tres Hofmeister Sensei (7th dan) in Denver, CO. This event marks the first time Doran Shihan will teach in Colorado, and promises a full day of aikido training of the highest caliber.
